Mali awards 15% of arable lands to young people, women
President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita,
Mali’s Head of State, has announced the award of 15 percent of all arable lands
in the country to the youth and women.
Keita made the announcement at an
ordinary session of the country’s parliament on May 2 and presided by the Mali’s
high council of agriculture.
While speaking at the session,
the president said he hopes that a recently passed legislation on agricultural
lands will lead to major changes in tenure of land rights, both individual and
collective, and contribute to the reduction of conflicts between rural
communities.
“For this to become a reality,
the rights of most vulnerable groups of the society have to be respected. I am
glad that women and youth are not left out as 15 percent of lands will be
provided them to insure they become more autonomous.”
He also expressed satisfaction over
results produced during the previous agricultural season. Over the period, Mali
recorded an output of 8,849,551 tonnes of cereals (3,770,000 more than
expected), 674,000 tonnes of cotton and 45,624 tonnes of red meat. In addition,
5,664 cows were inseminated and 30,187,000 livestock were vaccinated.
