Borno State Government has distributed fertilisers and other farming inputs to 5,000 rice farmers for the 2017 cropping season under the Federal Government’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP). The benefiting farmers were drawn from Jere, Konduga, Biu and Shani Local Government Areas of the state.

Governor Kashim Shettima who disclosed this at the launching of the exercise in Gongonlon Zabalmari Rice Plantation, Jere Local Government Area, said the state government aimed to boost agricultural production by assisting the rice farmers.

Alhaji Muhammad Dili, Commissioner for Agriculture, said all farmers who registered under ABP would be provided with fertilisers, seeds, chemicals, water pumps, knapsack sprayers and funds to pay for ploughing, harrowing, harvesting as well as produce packaging and transportation.

Dili said “We are starting with four local government areas, following the return of peace and improved the security situation. The programme will later be expanded to cover over 20,000 farmers in other local government areas of the state.”

Also speaking, Alhaji Abiso Kabir, Manager, Walwane Agricultural Supply Company, a client to the ABP, said each registered farmer would cultivate one hectare of farmland, adding that Walwane has made adequate arrangements to ensure uninterrupted supply of inputs and other agricultural commodities to farmers.

“We are providing inputs to farmers, who are expected to cultivate 5, 000 hectares of land in the selected areas,” Kabir said.
