Bauchi records 300 per cent increase in sesame production

Sesame farmers in Bauchi State have recorded about 300 per cent increase in production as a result of the two-way effort between OLAM Nigeria Limited and Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme (BSADP).

Ronsha Tated, Kano Regional Office Manager of OLAM, who disclosed this in Ningi during the launching of OLAM Community Resource Services for farmers at the weekend said the collaborative relationship which started in 2008 raised the production per hectare in the state from 264kg/ha in 2008 to 850kg/ha in 2016.

Tated said the company purchased over 11,000 metric tonnes of sesame worth N3.3 billion from farmers in the state last year while 650 sesame farmers are expected to receive quality seeds and fertilizer in the OLAM intervention programme this year.

While commending OLAM for coming to the aid of farmers in the state, Yakubu Kirfi, Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Bauchi State, the state government is willing to collaborate on projects that will improve revenue generation for the government and individuals to conduct business.

The commissioner then called on beneficiaries of the company’s gesture to make good use of the opportunity provided them.
