Nigeria can break dependence on oil with agric policy – don

Professor Musibau Bamikole, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin (UNIBEN), has said the Federal Government can stabilise the economy with the recently unveiled agriculture policy if effectively managed.

Bamikole, a professor of Agronomy, asserted this while speaking with newsmen in Benin, the Edo State capital recently to announce the 61st Conference/General Meeting of the Association of Deans of faculty of Agriculture in Nigeria (ADAN) that will hold in the ancient city between July 3 and July 6.

He said ADAN members, along with experts in agriculture, will be attending the conference in UNIBEN to brainstorm on agriculture international best practices for economic development. The theme of the conference is “Breaking Nigeria’s monolithic Economy through Agriculture.”

He said since the price of crude oil fell in the international market, “It has become obvious that Nigeria has to look elsewhere to sustain its economy.’’

According to him, it is now clear that diversification of the economy is the only solution.

“And investing in agriculture will surely revive and drive our economy with the abundance of vast hectares of fertile land across the 36 states of the federation.”
