FG pledges to revive Ada Rice Irrigation Project

In order to encourage dry-season farming Mr. Suleiman Adamu, Minister of Water Resources, has said the Federal Government would revive the Ada Rice Irrigation Project in Adani, Anambra State which was abandoned after the Nigerian Civil War ended 46 years ago.

The minister who disclosed this at the end of an inspection tour of the general layout of the project covering about 1,500 hectares of irrigable land noted that by bringing the project back on stream, farmers in the area would be able to undertake farming operations during the dry season.

He added that restoration of the project would also enable farmers to cultivate at least two crops per season. Adamu said the restoration plan is in line with the government’s blueprint and action plan on how to restructure the operations River Basin Development Authorities in the country.

Urging residents of the area to support government’s efforts by protecting the facilities in their domains, Adamu who also visited the Ivo River Irrigation Project sited on the boundary between Enugu and Ebonyi states said the Federal Government is determined to resuscitate abandoned projects.

The minister, in a statement issued in Abuja after his inspection tour of the Lower Anambra Irrigation project, said that the level of uncompleted works at the project sites was shocking.
Adamu said that the Federal Government had started work on the Adada River Dam project which had about 1.4 million cubic meters of water capacity.

He said that the dam would supply the Nsukka community and its environs with water for drinking and other domestic uses.
